Doom |
2,393KB |
Chosen by Computer Gaming World
as part of their 'Hall of Fame' ("DOOM revolutionized PC action
games"), DOOM has been one of the most played computer games of the
past few years. And for good reason. I admit, it scared the hell outta me
when I first played it. Even today, with increasingly sophisticated 3D
action games (Quake, Unreal, Halflife, etc.) DOOM's gameplay is classic.
Get it now, even if you've already played it ... it's still fun |
Duke
Nukem 3D |
5,785KB |
Does blowing away pigcops,
destroying entire buildings, and shooting your way through an adult XXX
store sound enjoyable? Then you'll love Duke 3D. (Note: There isn't
actually anything X-rated in the game.) Uses the "Build" engine,
which is still similar to the old Wolf3D engine in that there are no rooms
on top of other rooms, but it's been tweaked and pushed to the max. Lots
of fun! (Note: Several people have emailed me to
comment that there ARE rooms-above-rooms in Duke3D. While the effect of
rooms-above-rooms can be _simulated_ in Build, there are never really any
rooms on top of other rooms in the game, and thus it's not truly 3D.) |
Quake |

I don't know how I missed adding
this game! One of the best DOS games ever? Probably! I have spent many
hours playing this classic, and still go back to play it sometimes. If you
have never played it ... get it now! With the release of Quake, iD
Software once again revolutionized the 3D shooting genre. It's amazing,
even today! |
Wolfenstein
3D |
730KB |
What can I say? The game that
started it all, and helped to define what is now one of the most popular
computer game genres. If you've never played it (who hasn't?) you should.
(Note: This game seems to really hate Win95/98. Run
it from straight DOS, or risk having it crash often ... or not work at
all.) |
Ken's
Labyrinth |
891KB |
Sort of like Wolf3D, but more ...
wacky. It was created by Ken Silverman (who later went on to design the
"Build" engine used for Duke3D). Originally he released it on
his own ... later it was purchased by Epic Megagames, although I liked the
original better. It's still fun to play even though it uses outdated
technology, and it's more likely to work on your computer than Wolf3D is. |
C-Dogs |
650KB |
The sequel to Cyberdogs (below),
C-Dogs improves the original Cyberdogs gameplay formula. The game involves
you taking your character on missions which usually involve shooting
anything around using a variety of weapons that can be bought before
missions. Many more options are available in this version, one of the most
interesting being an editor that allows you to create your own C-Dogs
campaigns. Note: I couldn't get any sound working on
my computer but I've added this anyways because I assume that most people
should get sound ... don't email me about this problem because I can't
help! :)

Cyber
Dogs |

A top view Gauntlet style
shooter. It's simple, fast and a heck of a lot of fun, especially in two
player mode. First, you use money to buy different weapons. Then you walk
through different areas collecting items and killing guards. It's more fun
than it sounds when I describe it, especially considering the small size
of the zipfile. :) |
Epic
Pinball |
843KB |
My favorite computer pinball
games! The shareware version only contains one table, but it's really
cool. Great graphics, smooth scrolling, SB sounds, and "good
enough" physics. It's really fun to play, and remember that a
computer pinball game can do stuff you never could with a physical table.
Ordering the whole collection from Epic would be worth it. I did! |
Isle
Wars |
212KB |
In this strategy style game your
goal is to take over the world! It's similar to the classic game Risk, but
adds some new elements like natural disasters. There's quite a lot of
thinking and planning required to be successful. Plus you can play against
computer opponents ... luckily you can adjust the difficulty level! It may
not have the greatest graphics or sound effects but it's definitely
enjoyable if you like this sort of game. |
Parched
Terrain |
1,404KB |
A pretty cool tank wargame. In
it, you and a second player (there seems to be no single player mode) can
battle it out with various weapons by taking turns firing shots at
eachother. While it's got some nice graphics and some SB sound effects,
Scorched Earth (below) is a better game overall ... however, Parched
Terrain is a nice alternative. |
Scorched
Earth |

The best tank war game I've ever
seen. It's called 'The Mother of all games' by the author. In it, you are
competing against up to 10 other tanks (controlled by other players or by
the computer) and you battle by entering a velocity and turrent angle and
firing off various weapons, which you can purchase between rounds. It
looks and plays great, and it's great fun blowing up a tiny little tank
with a huge nuke. |
